Welcome to North Texas Arts & Crafts, the site of photographer Earl W. Johnson.
My introduction to photography began in the mid-50’s as a teenager employed to assist Joe Mason, a disabled Korean War Veteran, being trained by the Veterans Administration in the Art of Photography. I was hired primarily to assist Mr. Mason in the darkroom and to maintain an orderly appearance in his studio. Mr. Mason allowed me to be present for the majority of his training classes and this afforded me an opportunity to learn all aspects of the business.
Growing up in the beautiful Tidewater area of Southeastern Virginia gave me a profound love of nature’s awesome beauty. I embarked on a life-long mission of capturing this beauty not only on film, but also on canvas.
I still enjoy working with film and the majority of my scenic images were captured on 120 or 35 mm film. I limit my digital work in this type of photography and use digital exclusively for photos of people. My all-time favorite camera is the Yashica Mat 124G, a simple low end box camera produced in Japan.
After a lengthy period of military service that exposed me to the cultures of Europe, Asia and all parts of this country, I decided to get some formal training in art and studied at various community colleges around the country. During this training I became involved with several environmental organizations such as Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation and National Geographic Society. Since the early 70’s this has heavily influenced my efforts to attract and gain support for conservation programs.
The breath-taking scenes in this collection reflect my relentless passion for nature and my efforts to raise public awareness of its beauty. I hope they will give you the same inspiration and encouragement that I experienced while capturing these precious and often fleeting moments.
